Internet access. Make sure it's broadband. Cable is best. And you CAN use wireless, but it is best to have yoru PS3 directly hardwired to the modem via Ethernet cable. Once that is set up, you have to go into your network settings on the PS3 and set up your connection. If it is hardwired, it will do all this for you automatically. Now that all of that is set up, you have to create a PSN account. You should go through this step while setting up your PS3 user id. Once you have a PS3 account, you are all set.
