Default You opinion on using the Nintendo Wii in Phys ed classes *im writing my speech on - 04-19-2008, 05:06 PM

it*? Hi! I am writing a speech on some articles I have read about the Nintendo Wii in Phys ed. classes in England. My veiw is that it should not be being used in classes, and I would like to hear other peoples opinions, so I can better gauge how my audience will be thinking about the idea. Please post any veiws you may have on the idea, and it would be appriciated if you posted ALL the questions that popped into your head, so I canbe sure to be clear in my presentation about these parts. Here are a few links that I am using for my presentation refrences (Not all of them, but a sample) please read them before you comment, or at least read one or two.

Please be very honest with your posts, its very important to my assignment, also, post any info you have that you think I may find helpful. THANKS SO MUCH!

Personally, I think it could encourage children who don't enjoy doing the standard sports, such as Netball or Hockey to join in and participate in P.E lessons. However, I think it could cost too much to put this into every school so that every child could make use of the game during their lesson. In a typical one hour lesson, every child is exercising at the same time together, Wii Fit could limit this to one or two children exercising at once, therefore limiting the effectiveness, fairness and overall point of the P.E lesson. As a Wii owner myself, I think Wii Fit is a game for home use, it shouldn't be used to replace the standard P.E lesson.

Possible Questions:

Will each child be able to access the game for an effective time during the lesson?

Will it encourage children to participate more?

Will children who are members of school teams, such as football, find this an effective method of training?

Could the money be spent on more useful things, such as more sports supplies (balls, trampolines, rackets etc.)

Will this replace the role of the teacher?

Could this decrease the number of children trying traditional sports and being part of teams?

I do NOT think they should be used in pe class. Most of the games require you only use you're arms, which mostly consits of just swinging them back and forth, or making small movements, like twisting or twitching. Tell me, how is that exercise? It's not! Doing that will only make you lose maybe 25 calories an hour or so. Even though a few Wii games require you to move, like Wii boxing, that does not mean that should replace running.

Kid's these days get enough video games at home, school's shouldnt have to buy hundreds of dollars worth of equipment just to satisfy their boredom. School is to teach students about the real world, not give them brain rotting video games.

If a school is going to get a video game system that exercises a kid, I say go with DDR. That requires much more movement than a Wii, because it incorporates the legs, which are big on exercise. Plus, it requires much more coordination, which is important for a child to learn.

Or, better yet, stay with the traditional method of PE, such as jogging and touch football. Keep the video games where they belong (*couph* garbage! *cough*), not in our schools.

EDIT The guy above me is right. The cost for Wii's are ridiculous, and they limit only maybe 2-4 kids per play, which is not nearly enough. This could result in fights, which could also lead to damaged equipment.
